Volleyball Sweeps Widener to Up Win Streak to Four

CHESTER, Pa. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team defeated Widener University on the road, 3-0, in a non-conference match on Thursday night.
 
The Garnet posted a .316 hitting percentage for the match while holding the Pride to just a .146 clip. Alexia Enache led the squad with 13 kills while adding five digs and a pair of service aces. Zindzhi Montgomery tallied seven kills with a .700 attack percentage, committing zero errors. Jalyn Miller chipped in five kills.
 
Madeline Mountcastle amassed 22 assists with Maya Sheridan contributing 11. Mountcastle also dropped in three aces. Melissa Eyer recorded 12 digs to lead Swarthmore followed by Ellie Streeper with seven.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet dominated the opening set, jumping out to an 8-0 lead. Isabel Adam totaled three kills, Montgomery posted two kills, and Mountcastle scored all three of her aces. Swarthmore led by as many as 15 (20-5) during the frame and compiled a .520 hitting percentage as a team. The Garnet ultimately took the first stanza 25-10.
 
- Swarthmore carried the momentum into the second, taking an 8-3 advantage. However, the Pride battled back with seven of the next eight points to go ahead 10-9. Widener led 16-14 when the Garnet scored five in a row for a three-point edge (19-16). The Pride rallied to tie the score at 20 but Swarthmore took the set with five of the next seven, winning 25-22. Aiste Bardauskaite, Enache, and Zion Vick all tallied a kill during the final stretch with Enache also registering an ace.
 
- Widener started strong in the third set, scoring six of the first eight points. The Pride nursed a two-point lead (8-6) before the Garnet went off for seven unanswered to go in front 13-8. Streeper produced two aces and a kill to lead her squad during the sequence. Widener did not go away however, battling back to even it up at 13. The teams went back and forth until they were level at 22 apiece. Two Pride errors put Swarthmore up two. A Widener kill made it 24-23 before Enache ended the match with a kill.
