CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team locked up a Centennial Conference Tournament berth on Saturday with a 3-0 victory at Washington College. It was the fifth straight win for the Garnet.
Swarthmore persevered despite an off day offensively, hitting just .193 as a team.
Isabel Adam posted a team-high 11 kills and added seven digs.
Alexia Enache and
Keira Miles tallied nine and seven kills respectively with Enache dropping in three aces. Defensively,
Melissa Eyer compiled 26 digs and
Angelina Heminway came up with three blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams went back-and-forth in the early going and it was tied at nine midway through the opening set. The Shorewomen then scored five of the next six to take a 14-10 lead. Trailing 16-12, the Garnet battled back with a 5-1 stretch of their own to tie it up at 17. After three consecutive Washington points, Swarthmore answered with a 6-1 run to go ahead 23-21.
Madeline Mountcastle and Adam each had an ace with
Zindzhi Montgomery, Adam, and Miles scoring one kill apiece. Enache finished the set with a kill to give the Garnet a 25-23 win.
- The teams traded points again throughout the second set. It was even at 10 when Swarthmore scored four straight for a 14-10 advantage. However, the Shorewomen came right back with five in a row to go ahead 15-14. Washington held a one-point edge (21-20) late in the set when Enache and
Aiste Bardauskaite notched back-to-back kills to put the Garnet in front again. The Shorewomen tied it at 22 with a kill but Heminway and Adam both came through with a kill before an Enache ace closed out the set for Swarthmore, 25-22.
- Washington got out to a 5-2 lead in the third set but the Garnet responded with a massive 15-4 run to take a 17-9 lead. Adam led the way with four kills during the stretch. The Shorewomen would not go away quietly, however, coming back with a 9-2 surge to get within one (19-18). With the score 21-20, Miles and Enache registered kills and
Maya Sheridan followed with an ace to get the Garnet within one point of the match. After a Washington kill, Heminway and Enache teamed up for a block to finish off the victory, 25-21.
