SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 13 Swarthmore College women's soccer team returned to conference play with a dominant 4-0 victory over Gettysburg College on Saturday. The Garnet remained perfect in the Centennial Conference as they secured an opening-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament.
Four different players contributed goals as the Garnet showcased its extraordinary depth.
Ava Gizzie opened the scoring in the fourth minute, notching their career-best 11th goal of the season to move into ninth all-time in single-season goals.
Macie Mangini also scored for the second-straight game, while
Celia Kanellakos and
Jordan Vrees added tallies. A rookie, Vrees celebrated her first collegiate goal and third point of the season.
Dahlia Bedward and
Lila Travers played double duty in net as they guided the Garnet to a pair of scoreless halves. Both keepers made a couple saves to combine for the team's 10th shutout of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a couple Garnet shot attempts missed wide in the opening minutes, Gizzie put their team on the board with a goal in the fourth minute.
Lauren Lior touched the ball to
Nicole Jensen, who weaved a beautiful pass to Gizzie from midfield. The junior then outran a pair of Bullet defenders before beating the goalie low for the game's opening score.
- In the 14th minute, Swarthmore executed a corner perfectly to give themselves a two-goal edge.
Haley Lewinski lofted a well-placed ball into the box, which was redirected by the head of Mangini for her second-straight game with a header goal.
- Gizzie nearly connected for another score in the 19th minute. Kanellakos lifted a pass into the box for the junior, who outran the Bullets defense once again. Gizzie caught up to the pass, but elevated a shot just above the crossbar.
- Just seconds before halftime, the Garnet pilled on with its third goal.
Lillian Jarmosevich floated a pass towards the top of the box, which bounced off the bodies of a Swarthmore and Gettysburg player. Kanellakos then cleaned up the mess, as she beat the keeper to a loose ball and then chipped a goal into the vacant net.
- The Garnet wasted no time, adding on with its fourth goal in the opening minute of the second half. Kanellakos caused more problems for the Bullets after sending a ball towards the top of the box. The ball was bobbled by a Gettysburg defender before Vrees jumped all over the mishandled ball and lifted another insurance tally over the keeper, making it 4-0.
- Swarthmore maintained pressure on the Bullets, while preserving its four-goal cushion. Lior was active on the offensive end with a flurry of shot attempts as she led a steady Swarthmore attack in the second half.
