SWARTHMORE, Pa - The Swarthmore College men's soccer team fought back to earn a draw against Gettysburg College, 2-2, on Saturday.
Late in the second half, Swarthmore trailed 2-1 until Len Yamabe evened the score with an equalizer in the 82nd minute. The Garnet offense battled hard in a must-win showdown, but settled for a draw with the Bullets. Kaden Cho tallied the team's other score with an opening goal in the third minute. Joseph Eyiolowope was credited with assists on both goals.
The Garnet debuted their special DesignFC jerseys, which were created in collaboration with the organization. The final jersey design celebrates both the diversity and traditions of the Swarthmore program. Along the bottom, the design highlights the many countries represented by team members, symbolizing the global unity that defines the group. The front of the jersey features the iconic campus landmarks representing the places and traditions that anchor game days and team culture.
Swarthmore also recognized its five seniors - Henry Lin, Adrien Marcelli, Toshiro Kenney, Eyiolowope and Jackson Haynes - before the start of today's match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cho had an excellent scoring opportunity in the opening minute after a feed from Yamabe, but fired a shot just wide. Moments later, the rookie was given a chance at redemption, and did not miss on his opportunity. Eyiolowope touched the first pass to Kenney, who sent Cho a cross to the opposite post. The rookie then tapped in the one-timer to give the Garnet an early edge after the third minute.
- The Bullets were turned away in the 15th minute after Colin Crowe deflected a shot off the crossbar with his fingertips. However, Gettysburg found an equalizer soon after, knotting the game at 1-1 in the 20th minute.
- Gettysburg struck early in the second half to give themselves an edge. The Bullets netted their second-unanswered score with a tally in the 46th minute.
- Gettysburg's keeper made a fantastic save in the 56th minute to rob Marcelli of a potential game-tying scoring. The senior stole the ball from a defender, carved out space in the box and then fired a strike to the opposite post. The keeper was forced to make a challenging diving stop to keep the crafty senior off the board.
- Swarthmore kept challenging the Bullets, as they turned up the intensity on offense. Javier Minuesa Sicilia ripped an attempt on goal in the 60th minute, but the keeper was positioned well to handle the hard-struck shot.
- Yamabe evened the score in the 82nd minute to breathe life into his squad. Cho played a ball towards the center of the box, which was redirected off the foot of Eyiolowope - setting Yamabe up beautifully for the equalizer. The Garnet fired off a couple of late shots, but ran out of time as they hunted for a go-ahead score.
