Field Hockey Posts Third-Straight Shutout Victory

CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Swarthmore College field hockey team continued to roll through the latter half of its conference schedule, claiming its third-straight shutout with a 1-0 victory at Washington College on Saturday.

The Garnet already sealed its Centennial Tournament fate with results from earlier this week. The team currently sits in a log jam at 6-2, tied with three other teams for the second seed in the conference.

Cassandra Conklin added to her program record for career shutouts, notching the 21st of her career and seventh of the season, which marks a career-best. The senior made three saves to headline a quiet afternoon for the Shorewomen offense.

Annika Hoyer provided the game's only score in the 52nd minute with an assist from Sarah Cooper. The rookie has had a breakout season, leading the Garnet with seven goals and 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet fired a couple shots on goal in the opening stanza, but were turned away on both chances. Cooper wasted no time, challenging the goalie in the opening minute, while Liza Semenenko rocketed a shot on cage off a corner feed in the 15th minute. The Shorewomen put together a couple chances of their own. Washington had one shot blocked, while Conklin made her first of three saves in the 11th minute.

- Early in the second, Conklin was challenged again, but rose to the occasion with another save. The Garnet had a couple attempts in the quarter, but could not put a shot on cage. Swarthmore threatened again with a pair of late corners, but nothing came of the opportunity.

- Swarthmore tilted momentum in its favor with a 5-1 shot advantage in the third quarter. Avery Bloom had a shot saved in the 35th minute, while Semenenko was turned away on a pair of strikes in the 41st and 42nd minutes. Amelia Landry attempted to put back a rebound on Semenenko's second attempt, but suffered a similar fate.

- Both teams attempted just one shot in a decisive fourth quarter. The Shorewomen had their lone attempt sail wide, while the Garnet executed a penalty corner for the game-winning score. In the 52nd minute, the Garnet sent a shot on cage, which was redirected perfectly by the stick of Hoyer. Cooper was credited with the assist after sending the ball towards a crowded cage.
