Field Hockey Takes Down No. 19 Haverford, Earns Fourth-Straight Shutout

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team took down No. 19 Haverford College, 3-0, in a dominant Centennial Conference victory on Wednesday evening. The Garnet defense recorded its fourth-straight shutout and secured a top-four seed in the conference tournament.

Annika Hoyer tallied a pair of goals, while Avery Bloom added a fourth-quarter score. Hoyer registered her eighth and ninth goals of the season. The first-year leads the team in goals, while tying for fifth in the conference and leading all rookies in scoring.

Cassandra Conklin made three saves to secure her career-best eighth shutout of the season. The senior moved into a tie for fourth all-time in single-season shutouts, while adding to her career record with 22 shutouts.

Swarthmore allowed limited chances for the Fords, who were outshot 15-6. Haverford registered only three shots on goal compared to 11 total from the Garnet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet threatened early in the contest with shots on goal from Erin Coyle and Liza Semenenko in the opening two minutes. Swarthmore then broke through in the 12th minute with a goal from Hoyer, who was set up by an excellent feed from Kayla Fink. The reigning Centennial Rookie of the Year weaved a perfectly-placed pass through traffic to set up Hoyer on the run.

- Early in the second, Hoyer struck again to give her squad a two-goal cushion. Semenenko fired a rocket towards the cage, which was redirected by the stick of Hoyer for her second goal. The Fords attempted just one shot in the stanza, which was turned away by Conklin. Swarthmore headed into halftime with an 8-2 edge in shots.

- Swarthmore continued to dictate pace in a scoreless third quarter. Sarah Cooper fired a shot on goal off a corner attempt in the 36th minute. Cooper and Hayley Harris were then turned away on consecutive shots in the final seconds of the quarter.

- In the 47th minute, Bloom put the ball in the back of the cage to finish off the Fords. Semenenko fed the ball to Bloom, who snuck the ball past the goalie at the opposite post. Haverford had its best chance of the evening with a pair of shots in the 59th minute, but Conklin stepped up and answered the call for Swarthmore.
