Volleyball Inches Closer to Centennial Tournament Berth with Sweep of McDaniel

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team picked up its third straight Centennial Conference win with a 3-0 sweep of McDaniel College on Friday night.
 
The Garnet boasted an efficient attack, hitting .349 and committing just seven errors. They also sported an impressive .695 sideout percentage. Isabel Adam and Keira Miles led the way with 13 and 11 kills respectively. Adam added six digs while Miles compiled a .360 attack percentage. Angelina Heminway and Aiste Bardauskaite each tallied five kills while swinging at a .714 and .385 clip respectively.
 
Madeline Mountcastle totaled 21 assists followed by Maya Sheridan with 11 helpers. Melissa Eyer paced the defense with 14 digs. With the victory, Swarthmore is on the verge of locking up a Centennial playoff spot and can clinch as early as Saturday with a loss by Dickinson.
 
The Garnet held their HEADStrong Pink Out Game during the match, raising awareness of breast cancer and generating support for those affected in the local volleyball community. You can contribute to the squad's cause here.



 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a back-and-forth opening set with neither team able to take a commanding lead for a long stretch. Swarthmore held to a one-point edge (16-15) before it strung three points together to go ahead by four. The Green Terror came within two (20-18) then the Garnet pulled away with five of the next six to take the set 25-19. Adam registered a pair of kills, Miles added one, and Eyer notched an ace down the stretch.
 
- McDaniel was ahead 2-1 early in the second when Swarthmore took over with a 12-3 run. Five different players recorded a kill during the surge. The Green Terror was able to cut the deficit to five but the Garnet closed out the frame with a 5-2 stretch to win 25-17. Heminway, Adam, Bardauskaite, and Enache all had a kill before the set ended on a McDaniel service error.
 
- Swarthmore scored three of the first four points in the third set but the Green Terror answered with four in a row to take the lead 5-3. McDaniel remained in control into the middle of the stanza, leading by as many as four. With the score, 15-11, the Garnet rallied for 12 of the next 15 points to jump in front 23-18. Four players notched a kill with Sheridan and Heminway tallying two and one aces respectively. The Green Terror closed the gap to two (24-22) before Miles ended the match with a kill.
