Volleyball Overpowers Bryn Mawr, 3-0

SWARTHMORE, PA. - The Swarthmore College volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Bryn Mawr College on Tuesday night. The Garnet have not conceded a set to the Owls since the 2008 season.

The Garnet recorded 20 service aces to set new season-high, recording their highest total since 2017. Lois Matsukawa led the charge for the Garnet with a game-high six aces, while Madeline Mountcastle and Nicole Kim both tallied five aces. 

Zion Vick put together a career-high eight kills to lead the offense, while Angelina Heminway, Alexia Enache and Jalyn Miller all contributed with seven.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet raced out to a fast start with a 7-0 opening to the first set. Isabel Adam set the tone for the squad, notching back-to-back kills to open the stanza. The Garnet maintained a tight grip on the match behind excellent serving. The team tallied seven aces in the set, including four by Madeline Mountcastle. Swarthmore closed the set on a 6-1 run to secure a 25-8 victory. 

- Swarthmore picked up where they left off for the second set. Enache and Vick registered consecutive kills to create a 12-5 edge. Swarthmore kept rolling through the second set, stringing together three-straight kills from Vick, Miller and Angelina Heminway to build a 16-7 lead. Later in the set, Ellie Streeper added back-to-back aces to help spark an 8-3 finish to the set, 25-13. 

- Matsukawa strung together four-straight aces to fuel a 10-0 run to open the final set. Zindzhi Montgomery and Vick capped off the stretch with a block to force an Owls timeout. Later in the stanza, Kim rallied for five-straight aces to prompt a final Bryn Mawr timeout, 18-2. The Owls responded with six-straight points, but could not overcome a 16-point deficit as they fell in the final set, 25-8. Sakura Shimozono capped off a dominant evening with an ace as she captained a 7-0 stretch to put away Bryn Mawr.
