Box Score 3 ROME, Ga. – Swarthmore College's
Michael Melnikov went 2-1 at the ITA Cup this week, reaching the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national tournament. It is the second time in his career that the senior has played at the event.
Melnikov qualified for the tourney after winning the ITA Southeast Regional earlier this month. He bested his previous result at the ITA Cup from 2022, when he was defeated in the Round of 16.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Melnikov began play against Ithaca College in the Round of 16. He won the opening set 6-3 before wearing down his opponent and cruising to a 6-1 victory in the second.
- The Garnet senior then drew the tournament's number one seed from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, a two-time ITA Cup champion and the reigning NCAA singles champion, in the quarterfinals. Melnikov gave his foe all they could handle but ultimately fell in a 5-7, 4-6 decision.
- In his lone consolation match, Melnikov handily defeated Gustavus Adolphus College 6-2, 6-1 to finish in a top-six slot for the tournament.
