Field Hockey Muscles Past McDaniel, Conklin Breaks Program Shutout Record

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team overpowered McDaniel College, 4-0, to improve to 5-2 in the Centennial Conference on Saturday afternoon.

Cassandra Conklin posted her 20th career shutout to become the program's all-time career leader in the statistic. The senior surpassed the long-standing mark set by Garnet Hall of Famer Kelly Wilcox '97.

Conklin made two saves in the effort, posting her sixth shutout of the season, which marks a new single-season career high. She has recorded five or more shutouts in her previous three seasons.

The Garnet provided plenty of scoring to back up a milestone performance from their goalie. Erin Coyle registered a pair of opening-half goals to lead the Garnet, while Amelia Landry and Magdelana Jordan added on to the goal total. Jordan also tallied an assist to register three points for the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Coyle opened the scoring in the fourth minute with her first of two goals in the opening half. The Garnet scored in transition after Liza Semenenko played the ball to Gabriella Vasquez, who connected with Coyle at the opposite post. Landry piled on with an insurance tally in the 13th minute. Following a corner attempt, the senior elevated a rip from Sarah Cooper over the goaltender.

- Early in the second, Coyle scored again to give the Garnet a three-goal cushion. Jordan controlled a loose ball outside the circle and then fed the ball to Coyle at the opposite post to beat the goalie. Semenenko had a chance to add on in the 22nd minute. The rookie found some free space inside the circle, but rocketed a shot just wide of the cage.

- Conklin made a remarkable pad stop to preserve her shutout in the 32nd minute. At the other end, Jordan capitalized on a second-chance opportunity in the 34th minute to notch the team's fourth goal. Semenenko unleashed a shot on goal, which was saved by the goalie, but found the stick of Jordan off the ensuing rebound. Later in the quarter, Jordan had another attempt on goal when she fired a strike into the pads of the goaltender.

- Conklin maintained her shutout in a scoreless fourth quarter. The Garnet outshot the Green Terror 2-0 in the final stanza.
