SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team picked up an important conference win over Bryn Mawr College, 1-0, on Wednesday night. Senior goaltender
Cassandra Conklin totaled her 19th career shutout to tie the all-time program record.
Conklin made seven saves in 60-scoreless minutes to post her fifth shutout of the season. The senior stepped up and made several crucial stops late in the game to preserve a one-goal advantage.
Swarthmore scored the game's lone goal in the second minute, which proved to be enough for the Garnet. Amelia Landry hammered home the deciding score after putting back a rebound that shot towards the top of the circle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore broke out to a fast start with three shots in the opening two minutes. Landry put the Garnet on the board following a corner attempt in the second minute. The senior collected a rebound off a shot from Liza Semenenko, and then ripped a strike through traffic and into the back of the cage. The Garnet outshot their opponent 6-2 in the stanza with all of their shots registering on goal.
- The Garnet held the Owls without a shot in a scoreless second quarter. Semenenko, Erin Coyle and Annika Hoyer all put shots on goal in the stanza, but were unable to sneak an insurance tally past the goalie. Swarthmore's first 10 shot attempts were all credited on goal.
- Early in the third, Conklin rose to the occasion with three saves to keep the Owls off the board. Magdelana Jordan threatened in the 39th minute, but had her shot punched away by the netminder. Bryn Mawr threw its best punch at the Garnet, outshooting Swarthmore 4-1 in the quarter, but Conklin and the Garnet defense were able to hold off several surges from the Owls.
- Conklin stepped up and made another massive save in the 55th minute. The senior batted a deflection following an Owls corner attempt, while Landry made a heads-up play to clear the ball out of the circle. Bryn Mawr pulled its goalie with three minutes to play in favor of an extra attacker, but were unable to steal a goal from the Garnet. Swarthmore controlled possession for the final two minutes of the game as they killed clock in their attacking corner.
