CARLISLE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College field hockey team battled at No. 13 Dickinson College on Saturday but the Garnet were ultimately done in by a penalty stroke goal with under five minutes remaining in regulation, falling 2-1 to the Red Devils in Centennial Conference action.
Dickinson took a 1-0 lead in the opening quarter before
Magdelana Jordan tied it up for Swarthmore in the second period. A busy third frame with eight total shots saw the contest remain scoreless. The teams looked to be headed to overtime down the stretch but the Red Devils drew a penalty stroke with 4:24 to go and converted for the game-winning tally.
The two sides were close in chances with Dickinson holding a 12-10 advantage in shots. However, the Garnet recorded more shots on cage with eight compared to five for the Red Devils.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams went back and forth in the opening quarter with Dickinson having a slim 3-2 edge in shots. The Red Devils found the back of the cage in the 12
th minute, getting a shot through traffic and into the left side.
- Swarthmore rallied in the second, outshooting Dickinson 4-1 in the period. The Garnet netted the equalizer in the 26
th minute, scoring on a rush down the field.
Gabriella Vasquez dribbled down the right side and centered for Jordan, who corralled a bouncing ball and fired into the cage.
- The Red Devils had a 5-3 advantage in shots in the third quarter but the game remained even as both goalkeepers registered a pair of saves. In the fourth, Dickinson was awarded a penalty stroke in the 56
th minute and scored to take a 2-1 lead. Swarthmore pulled
Cassandra Conklin from the cage for an extra attacker with three minutes remaining. However, the Garnet were unable to tie the score despite three penalty corners as the Red Devils goalie stopped the lone chance on goal.
