CARLISLE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College field hockey team battled at No. 13 Dickinson College on Saturday but the Garnet were ultimately done in by a penalty stroke goal with under five minutes remaining in regulation, falling 2-1 to the Red Devils in Centennial Conference action.

Dickinson took a 1-0 lead in the opening quarter before Magdelana Jordan tied it up for Swarthmore in the second period. A busy third frame with eight total shots saw the contest remain scoreless. The teams looked to be headed to overtime down the stretch but the Red Devils drew a penalty stroke with 4:24 to go and converted for the game-winning tally.

The two sides were close in chances with Dickinson holding a 12-10 advantage in shots. However, the Garnet recorded more shots on cage with eight compared to five for the Red Devils.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams went back and forth in the opening quarter with Dickinson having a slim 3-2 edge in shots. The Red Devils found the back of the cage in the 12th minute, getting a shot through traffic and into the left side.

- Swarthmore rallied in the second, outshooting Dickinson 4-1 in the period. The Garnet netted the equalizer in the 26th minute, scoring on a rush down the field. Gabriella Vasquez dribbled down the right side and centered for Jordan, who corralled a bouncing ball and fired into the cage.

- The Red Devils had a 5-3 advantage in shots in the third quarter but the game remained even as both goalkeepers registered a pair of saves. In the fourth, Dickinson was awarded a penalty stroke in the 56th minute and scored to take a 2-1 lead.
