COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - The Swarthmore College men's soccer team earned a crucial three points in a conference victory over Ursinus College, 2-0, on Friday night. The Garnet climbed to fourth place in the standings heading into tomorrow's action.
Adrien Marcelli tallied a pair of second-half goals to lift his team past the Bears. The senior captain scored off a penalty kick in the 54th minute, before tacking on an insurance goal in the 83rd minute.
Colin Crowe made two saves in a scoreless 90-minutes for the Garnet. The rookie posted his fifth shutout of the season and has not allowed a goal in his previous four starts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet defense fought off a flurry of attacks in the opening 20 minutes. The Bears fired five shots with a pair of attempts registering on goal, but both were successfully saved by Crowe.
- Marcelli and Toshiro Kenney put a couple shots on goal in the 20th and 22nd minutes to kickstart the Swarthmore attack. The seniors helped flip momentum in their team's favor with a 9-2 shot advantage to end the opening half.
- Swarthmore carried its offensive momentum into the second half with a couple early shot attempts from Noah Daniel. The Garnet then caught a major break after Marcelli was hooked in the box and awarded a penalty kick in the 54th minute. The senior, who was a perfect 4-for-4 on penalty kicks last season, did not waste his opportunity as he buried a strike in the lower-right corner to give the Garnet a 1-0 lead.
- The Garnet remained on the offensive attack to preserve their one goal advantage. In the 83rd minute, Marcelli put the game away with his second score of the contest. The senior received a pass from Dante Cholmeley-Jones, and then rocketed a shot from center, which found its way in the top right corner of the goal.
