Men’s Tennis Sends Pair to Championship Semifinals at ITA Regionals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Swarthmore College men's tennis team had a singles and doubles competitor punch tickets to tomorrow's championship semifinals at the ITA Regional Tournament.

Michael Melnikov/ Max Lindstrom advanced to tomorrow's championship doubles semifinals with victories over Hampden-Sydney College and the University of Mary Washington. Melnikov also advanced in the championship singles tournament with victories over Shenandoah University and Salisbury University. 

Lalith Suresh and Lindstrom both advanced to the quarterfinals in championship singles. Both individuals won their Sweet 16 matchups, but fell to their challengers in the quarterfinals. 

DOUBLES
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Melnikov/ Lindstrom advanced to the doubles quarterfinals with an 8-5 victory over Hampden-Sydney. The pair then punched their ticket to the semifinals with an 8-5 victory over Mary Washington.

- Max Pogorelov/ Nicholas Choo and Dylan Hayes Gilbert/ Aadhi Raja both had their tournament runs come to an end in the Sweet 16. Pogorelov/ Choo fell to Carnegie Mellon, 8-4, while Gilbert/ Raja lost to Johns Hopkins, 8-4. 

SINGLES
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Melnikov won his Sweet 16 matchup against Shenandoah, 6-3, 6-1, in championship singles. The top-seeded junior then punched his ticket to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Salisbury.

- Suresh advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3, victory over Franklin & Marshall College in championship singles. The junior had his run come to an end in the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2, loss to Carnegie Mellon. 

- Lindstrom outlasted Christopher Newport University, 7-6, 6-4, in his Sweet 16 championship singles matchup. The junior then dropped a hard-fought quarterfinals matchup to Johns Hopkins. Lindstrom took the opening set, 6-4, before falling 6-3 in the second set. Hopkins then clinched victory with a 10-4 win in the third set. 

- Rishi Verma lost a hard-fought battle in the Sweet 16 of championship singles. The sophomore dropped the opening set, 6-4, to Carnegie Mellon, before bouncing back with a 6-3 decision in the second set. Verma then dropped a tightly-contested tiebreaker, 13-11, to put an end to his championship bid. 

- Kai Chen lost to Carnegie Mellon, 7-5, 6-1, in the Sweet 16 of championship singles. The first-year impressed with a deep tournament run to open his rookie campaign. 

- Aamish Pal won his opening round matchup in the B3 singles bracket with an 8-1 decision over the University of Mary Washington. He then defeated Washington & Lee University, 8-5, in the quarterfinals. 

UP NEXT
The Garnet continue action tomorrow at the ITA Regional Tournament. Melnikov and Lindstrom will both represent the Garnet in the championship semifinals.
