Hitchingham Nets Lone Goal, Defense Dominates as Field Hockey Tops No. 14 TCNJ

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College field hockey team knocked off a second nationally-ranked foe in a four-day span with a 1-0 shutout of No. 14 The College of New Jersey on Wednesday night.

Sophia Hitchingham tallied the only goal of the contest in the closing seconds of the first quarter. It was her second marker of the season. The Garnet won the shot count, 7-4, and allowed the Lions to place just one attempt on goal. Cassandra Conklin played all 60 minutes in the Swarthmore cage to earn her first clean sheet of the year and 10th of her career.

It was the Garnet's first-ever win against TCNJ, a program that boasts 11 national championships, the most in Division III history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet did not allow a single shot attempt in the opening period as they stifled the TCNJ offense. Swarthmore recorded its first shot in the 11th minute but it was stopped by the goalkeeper. The Garnet then earned a penalty corner opportunity but were unable to record a shot from the chance.

- With the seconds winding down in the first, Katherine Kohn carried the ball into the offensive end. Kohn was able to sneak a pass through the defense to an open Hitchingham on the doorstep. Hitchingham's initial shot was stopped but she followed up her own rebound and found the back of the cage for a 1-0 Swarthmore lead.

- In the second, the Garnet managed only two shots and both went wide of the goal. The Lions finally threatened in the last minute of the half. TCNJ earned three penalty corners and registered a pair of shots. One was blocked and the second was knocked away by Conklin.

- The Swarthmore defense continued to dominate in the third quarter, blocking the Lions' only attempt at the cage. At the other end, the TCNJ backline continued to give the Lions a chance to come back, conceding just one shot by the Garnet.

- TCNJ's last flurry of offense came early in the fourth. The Lions had a pair of corner chances but only mustered one shot, which was blocked. Swarthmore was unable to put the game away with an insurance goal but the defense made Hitchingham's tally stand as the game-winner.
