Women’s Tennis Opens Fall Season with Swat Invite

| Box Score 3 SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team had an impressive showing at the Swarthmore Invitational to open their 2024-25 campaign this weekend.

The Garnet combined for a 22-8 overall record against Haverford, Franklin & Marshall and the Stevens Institute of Technology. Swarthmore went 8-4 in doubles action with a 14-4 record in singles play. The team's first-years also showcased their talents with a 10-3 record on the weekend. 

Ella Strickler and Alice Coxe both had excellent showings with 2-0 records in singles action. Strickler went 2-1 in doubles, while Coxe won her lone doubles match to remain unbeaten on the weekend. Lara Geib also stood out with a 2-1 singles record and 2-0 doubles mark. 

FRIDAY
SWARTHMORE vs. HAVERFORD

- The Garnet split doubles action against the Fords. Strickler/ Brianna Viets defeated their opponents, 8-4, to secure the lone doubles victory for Swarthmore. 

- Kathleen Shiffer took down her opponent in three sets. The junior claimed the opening set 6-4, before dropping the following set 2-6. She then regrouped with a 10-5 victory to take the match.

- Lisa Messier cruised to victory to earn a singles split for the Garnet. Messier won the opening set 6-1 and then clinched the match with a 6-0 decision. 

SATURDAY
SWARTHMORE vs. FRANKLIN & MARSHALL

- The Garnet went 4-2 in doubles play against the Diplomats. Shiffer/ Erin Li teamed up for an 8-5 victory to earn the team's first win. Lara/ Marissa Geib then combined for an 8-3 win, while the pairings of Veronica Komorek/ Messier and Cox/ Madeline Posner both won their matches 8-2, respectively. 

- Swarthmore cruised past the Diplomats with a 7-1 advantage in singles action. Li picked up her second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in singles. 

- The Geib sisters became multi-winners with a pair of singles victories to go with their doubles win. Lara bested her opponent, 6-3, 6-3, while Marissa won comfortably with a 6-4, 6-1 decision. 

- Strickler bounced back from a doubles defeat with a 6-4, 6-0 win in singles. Her doubles partner Katherine Zawada also recovered nicely in singles play with a 6-2, 6-4 win. 

- Komorek claimed her second victory of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Coxe also became a multi-winner with a 7-5, 7-6 decision. 

SATURDAY
SWARTHMORE vs. STEVENS

- Swarthmore held a 3-1 advantage in doubles action. Strickler/ Messier won the first match with a 8-5 decision. L Geib/ Posner then enjoyed an 8-2 win, while Komorek/ Ruthie Njagi won 8-4. 

- The Garnet went 5-1 against Stevens in singles action. Li was victorious with a 6-1, 6-3 decision to grab the team's first win.

- The pairing of Geib/ Posner won their respective singles matches against the Ducks. Geib took down her opponent with a 6-1, 6-1 decision. Posner then took care of business with a 6-1, 6-4 win. Strickler was also victorious in both singles and doubles play with a 6-0, 6-4 win over her challenger. 

- Coxe rounded out a successful weekend with a singles win. The junior bested her opponent, 6-2, 6-1.
