Field Hockey Falls Short in Tight Battle at No. 9 York

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team continued its non-conference gauntlet with a tightly-contested 1-0 loss at York College on Wednesday night. The Garnet have faced three top-10, nationally-ranked opponents in their first four games of the season.

Both teams went toe-to-toe in a game that remained scoreless for the opening 53 minutes until the Spartans notched the game's lone score to edge out the Garnet. York held a slim 11-10 shot advantage, while the Garnet led 7-6 in shots on goal.

Cassandra Conklin made a season-high five saves in her return to the cage. Magdelana Jordan led the way on offense with four shots and three attempts on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet defense stood strong in the face of three-straight corner attempts in the first quarter. The Spartans recorded a shot on goal on their third attempt, but were denied by a Conklin save. Swarthmore applied the pressure late in the stanza with four shots on goal. Jordan had her first two attempts stopped by the goalie, while Sophia Hitchingham's attempt was also saved by the goalie. Gabriella Vasquez then had a good look at the cage, but was turned away by a defensive save.

- Neither team put up much offense in a scoreless second quarter. York attempted the lone shot of the stanza, but had its attempt blocked away by a Garnet defender. The Garnet headed into intermission with a slim 4-3 shot advantage for the half.

- The stalemate continued in the third quarter as both teams remained scoreless. Conklin stood her ground with three saves in the stanza, while Jordan and Erin Coyle were turned away with late shots on goal for Swarthmore.

- Coyle continued to challenge the goalie with another shot on goal early in the fourth. The Spartans eventually broke through with the game-winning goal off a corner attempt in the 54h minute. Coyle attempted another shot late in the game, but was unable to get her strike on goal.
