Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Cruises Past DeSales in First Win, 5-0

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team captured its first victory of the season with a dominating win over DeSales University, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon.

Ava Gizzie opened the scoring for the Garnet in the ninth minute en route to a two-goal performance for the sophomore. Charlotte Carleton, Celia Kanellakos and Anwen Reed also added scores for their first career points, respectively. Carleton had a goal and an assist on the day after earning her second career start.

Lila Travers and Sofie Aird combined for the team's first shutout of the season. Travers did not face a shot on goal in the opening half, while Aird made three saves in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet got on the board early with a Gizzie goal in the ninth minute. Gizzie, who led the team in goals last season, found the back of the net for the first tally of their sophomore campaign. Keren Maze lifted the ball to Carleton, who touched the ball twice to Gizzie inside the box. The sophomore then controlled the pass with their chest before muscling the ball past the keeper.

- Swarthmore maintained pressure after their opening score. Aminah Evans had her deflection saved off a corner attempt in the 16th minute. Kanellakos then fired a shot low at the keeper in the next minute.

- The Garnet doubled its lead heading into intermission. Haley Lewinski played a beautiful cross to Reed from the right side. The first-year then settled the pass with her chest, before beating the keeper to the near post for her first collegiate tally.

- Gizzie took advantage of a DeSales miscue for their second goal of the game in the 51st minute. The keeper stepped up in the box to field a header, but slipped and lost control of the ball, which allowed Gizzie to steal possession for an easy score, 3-0.

- Carelton and Kanellakos both added to Swarthmore's lead with unassisted goals in the 52nd and 56th minutes, respectively. Carleton outran a defender to steal possession inside the box before beating the keeper low to the opposite post. Moments later, Kanellakos intercepted a pass and dribbled to the right side for the team's fifth-unanswered score, 5-0.
