Women’s Soccer Takes Down Rutgers-Camden on the Road

CAMDEN, NJ - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team held on to defeat Rutgers-Camden, 2-1, in its first road contest of the season on Wednesday evening.

The Garnet rode a pair of first-half goals to victory as they withstood the Scarlet Raptors. Ava Gizzie tallied their third goal of the season to open the scoring in the 25th minute. Celia Kanellakos then provided the deciding score in the 44th minute to give the Garnet a two-goal lead heading into halftime.

Lila Travers played the full 90-minutes for her second victory of the season. The junior made five saves and allowed one goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet challenged the Scarlet Raptors early with a shot on goal in the fifth minute. Macie Mangini sent a bouncing shot towards the keeper, which was deflected high over the crossbar. Swarthmore then continued to control play with consecutive shots on goal in the 16th minute. Allie Zitelli played a shot on goal from outside the box, which was deflected high by the keeper. Gizzie then controlled the rebound and fired a strike to the far post, which deflected wide by the outstretched keeper.

- After Swarthmore was credited with the first five shots of the game, Travers was tested with a pair of shots on goal. The junior batted away the first attempt from the right corner of the box. She then came out of the goal to make a kick save on an attacking defender inside the box.

- Gizzie opened the scoring in the 25th minute after Charlotte Carleton forced a turnover in the attacking zone. Carleton wrestled the ball away from a Rutgers defender before finding the foot of Gizzie, who fired a perfect strike from outside the box to the top right corner of the goal. The sophomore notched their team-leading third goal of the season.

- Kanellakos provided the Garnet with an important insurance tally heading into intermission. Charlotte Carleton played the ball to the first-year at the top of the box. Kanellakos then fired a shot from center past the diving keeper and into the left corner of the net. The first-year scored for the second-straight game to join Gizzie as one of two multi-goal scorers on the club.

- Rutgers trimmed its deficit in half with a goal in the 55th minute. Moments later, Travers made a diving save to keep Swarthmore in front.

- Gizzie kept applying pressure to the Scarlet Raptors as they fired off two more shots on goal in the second half. Gizzie took a team-high five shots with four attempts reaching the opposing keeper.
