No. 32 Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 7 Johns Hopkins in CC Championship

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The No. 32 Swarthmore College women's tennis team fell to top-seeded, No. 7 Johns Hopkins University, 5-1, in the Centennial Championship on Saturday night at the Brigade Sports Complex. The Garnet finished as the runner-up to the Blue Jays for the fourth-straight season.

Erica Stutz/ Nathalie Williams picked up the lone Swarthmore victory with a win in top doubles. Williams was also winning her No. 2 singles matchup before the match ended after Johns Hopkins clinched a team victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Swarthmore fell 8-1 in No. 3 doubles, Stutz/ Williams rallied for an impressive victory in top doubles. The pairing won 8-5 to even the team score at 1-1. 

- The Garnet came close to winning doubles action, but dropped a tightly-contested tiebreaker in No. 2 action. Oviya Kumaran/ Spencer Watts led early in the match, but fell 7-4 in the tiebreaker. 

- Hopkins won quickly in No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 decision. The Blue Jays then earned another key victory in top singles, 6-4, 6-2, to pull within a match of clinching. They eventually clinched the championship with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. 

- Williams fought to keep Swarthmore alive with a 6-4 win in the first set in No. 2 singles. The junior was trailing 3-2 in the second set before Hopkins clinched.

- Ella Strickler battled hard to win the opening set, 7-5, in No. 4 singles. The first-year was leading 2-1 in the second set.
