Box Score ST. LOUIS - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team had its season come to an end after
Nathalie Williams and
Erica Stutz dropped a tightly-contested battle (6-4, 3-6, 6-7 [5-7]) in the opening round of the NCAA Individual Championships on Saturday night. The Swarthmore duo was unable to overtake the University of Redlands' No. 14 ranked pairing of Maegan Deng and Livi Rockwood in a three-set tiebreaker.
The Garnet came back from an early deficit to claim victory in the opening set. After splitting the first four games, Swarthmore pulled away with consecutive wins to take a 4-2 advantage. The Bulldogs shrunk their deficit to 5-4, but were unable to overtake the Garnet, who clinched the opening set with with a 6-4 decision.
Both teams battled to a draw in the first four games of the second set. The teams exchanged wins again in games five and six, before Redlands rallied for three-straight wins to force a third set, 6-3.
After starting the third set with a 2-2 draw, the Garnet claimed the following two games to take a 4-2 advantage. The Bulldogs then flipped the script with three-consecutive wins to take their first lead of a pivotal third set, 5-4. With their backs against the wall, Williams and Stutz battled hard to win the next two games and regain their one-game lead. However, the Garnet were unable to close out the match as Redlands forced a tiebreaker on a double fault.
The Bulldogs got out to a fast start with the opening four points of the tiebreaker. The Garnet battled back to a one-point deficit on several occasions, but ended up falling 7-5 in the third-set tiebreaker.
