Softball Fights Off Elimination against WAC, Game Two Suspended Until Tomorrow

CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Swarthmore College softball team fought off elimination with a 3-0 shutout over top-seeded Washington College on Friday.

The Garnet also led Muhlenberg College, 4-2, in the third inning until the game was suspended due to unplayable conditions. The game will resume tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.

Lane Barron was excellent in seven-scoreless innings as she allowed just four hits and two walks in a win over the Shorewomen. Serafino Tinio had a RBI single for Swarthmore in the sixth, while Molly O'Sullivan added another run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly. Both of the team's RBI came from pinch hitters.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore threatened with a pair of runners in scoring position in the first inning, but had a runner doubled off in a run down to end the frame. Barron settled down the Garnet with an easy first inning to hang her first zero of the afternoon.

- Barron kept Washington off the scoreboard as she stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the second inning. Swarthmore then took advantage of a Shorewomen's error in the third to score the game's first run. Iris Barone set up the scoring opportunity with a walk and a stolen base, before scoring from second on a dropped flyball by the second baseman, 1-0.

- Barron allowed very few scoring opportunities for the Shorewomen as she kept traffic off the base paths. Swarthmore's defense was also stellar behind their ace as they went without an error for the entire game and made several incredible plays in the field. Jordan Jackson was responsible for the highlight of the afternoon with a sliding grab on a line drive to left field.

- Swarthmore added a run in the sixth inning. Avery McClure worked a one-out walk and Grace Taylor singled to advance a runner into scoring position. Tinio then came through with a clutch, two-out single to drive home an insurance run, 2-0.

- Jackson helped add on another Garnet run with a double to open the seventh inning. She later came home to score on an O'Sullivan sacrifice fly, 3-0. Barron then shut the door in the bottom half with a 1-2-3 inning.
