Softball Suffers 10-inning Loss in CC Tournament Elimination Game

CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Swarthmore College softball team fell short of the Centennial Championship game with an 8-7 loss in 10 innings against Muhlenberg College on Saturday. The game resumed this morning after being suspended on Friday afternoon.

The Garnet led 4-2 in the top of the third inning when yesterday's game was halted due to unplayable conditions. However, the Mules quickly erased their deficit with a pair of runs to open the morning. Muhlenberg then rallied for three runs in the fifth to take its first lead, 7-5. Swarthmore forced extra innings with a two-run sixth inning, but were unable to match a 10th-inning run from the Mules.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Iris Barone helped generate a run in the first inning with a walk and two stolen bases. The sophomore came home to score the first run after an errant throw on her second stolen base attempt. Swarthmore added on after Alex Simon was hit by a pitch and Olivia McClammy singled to put two runners on. Emily Bertrand then cleared the bases with a two-run triple down the right-field line, 3-0.

- Muhlenberg strung together a couple hits to plate two runs in the second inning. However, the Garnet took advantage of sloppy conditions and a couple Muhlenberg mistakes to score consecutive runs off wild pitches, 4-2.

- After the game resumed this morning, Muhlenberg evened the score with a two-run homer in the third inning. Bertrand then took the run back in the bottom half with a solo homer, 5-4.

- The Mules put themselves back in the driver's seat with three runs in the fifth inning. Muhlenberg homered twice in the inning to take its first lead of the game, 7-5.

- Swarthmore rallied back in the sixth inning with a pair of runs to tie the game. Kate Borza started the rally with a one-out single to shortstop, while Serafina Tinio worked a walk to put the tying run on base. The Garnet scored a run on an error to cut its deficit in half, before tying the game on a Simon single. Swarthmore had the bases loaded with two outs, but were unable to get the go-ahead run across, 7-7.

- Barron stranded a runner in scoring position in the seventh to preserve the tie game. The Garnet then advanced a runner to second base with one out in the bottom half, but were unable to plate the game-winning run.

- Swarthmore's offense went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings. The Mules then took advantage of Swarthmore's struggles with a leadoff single in the tenth. After bunting the go-ahead run to second base, Muhlenberg regained the lead with a sacrifice fly. Elisabeth O'Connor tried to get things going with a one-out, bunt single in the bottom of the inning, but was left stranded at first after consecutive fly outs to end the game.
