Baseball Falls Short in Close Battle Against No. 10 Johns Hopkins

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team came up short in a back-and-forth battle against No. 10 Johns Hopkins University in their series opener on Tuesday night.

The Garnet outhit the Blue Jays 13-5, but were unable to capitalize on scoring chances early. Swarthmore scored in four-straight innings with runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, but fell victim to a pair of big innings from the Hopkins nationally-ranked offense.

Max Roffwarg and Matthew Silvestre both strung together three-hit performances with a pair of RBI, while Joe Radek also added two RBI. Aidan Sullivan's hit streak came to an end at 33-straight games as he went 0-for-4 with a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jack Fitzgerald escaped a first inning jam with some help from his catcher. Following a two-out walk that bounced away from the catcher, Wilson Henze threw behind the base runner, who was caught leaning at third base, to pick him off to end the inning. Fitzgerald then tossed a scoreless second to wrap up two hitless frames.

- The Garnet were unable to capitalize on a triple to open the second inning. Silvestre drove the ball deep into the right-center field gap to reach third base, but was left stranded 90-feet away. Ben Buchman smoked a ball up the middle with one out, but the ball was knocked down by the pitcher to rob the Garnet of their first run.

- Kaiden Rosenbaum reached base on a four-pitch walk to open the third inning. Henze then advanced the runner to second on a sacrifice bunt, but the inning came to an end with another Swarthmore runner stranded at third base.

- In the fourth inning, Hopkins scored the first run of the afternoon without recording a hit. The Blue Jays loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batsmen before scoring on a wild pitch. Swarthmore's leadoff hitter reached base for the third-straight inning on a Max Beadling double to left field. Following a Buchman hard-hit single to right field, Radek cashed in on a bases-loaded opportunity with a game-tying knock to left field. Hopkins escaped further damage with an inning-ending double play, 1-1.

- Joshua Rankey tossed an easy shutdown frame as he retired the side in the fifth. Swarthmore loaded the bases again in the bottom of the inning. Silvestre put the Garnet ahead with a slow-rolling groundout to the right side, 2-1.

- Hopkins opened the sixth inning with a single to left field for its first hit. The Blue Jays gained the lead with a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double to pull ahead by two runs. Swarthmore loaded the bases in the bottom half for Roffwarg, who smoked a triple down the right-field line to tie the game, 4-4.

- The Blue Jays took the lead with a three-run homer in the seventh inning. Beadling then opened the bottom half with a double, while Silvestre drove him home with a long single off the centerfield wall. The Garnet came within inches of taking the lead as Rosenbaum ended the inning with a flyout to the edge of the leftfield warning track with two runners on, 7-5.

- Johns Hopkins added an insurance run in the ninth on a solo homer to center field. The Garnet were able to add a run on a Radek sac fly, but could not overtake the Blue Jays.
