LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 36 Swarthmore College women's tennis team topped Franklin and Marshall College on the road, 8-1, in the regular season finale on Saturday to secure the third seed in next week's Centennial Conference Tournament.
Lola Diaz and
Oviya Kumaran both earned victories in singles and doubles action to lead the Garnet.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Diaz and
Kathleen Shiffer shut out their opponents at third doubles, 8-0, to get Swarthmore off to a strong start. At first doubles,
Nathalie Williams returned to play after missing nearly a month due to injury, teaming with
Erica Stutz for an 8-2 victory. Kumaran and
Spencer Watts secured an 8-5 win at the second flight to complete the doubles sweep.
- Diaz had little trouble at first singles, picking up a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Ella Strickler earned a 6-2, 6-2 success at the second flight.
- Kumaran won her opening set at third singles, 6-4. Her opponent came back to take the second set, 6-3, before Kumaran pulled out the victory in a super tiebreak.
Lara Geib (8-6) and
Riya Rao (8-5) both garnered wins in a pair of abbreviated matches at fifth and sixth singles respectively. The Diplomats recorded their point at fourth singles.

The Garnet (10-5) host sixth-seeded Washington College for the first round of the conference tournament on Tuesday.
