HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team could not overcome an early deficit and opened its series against Haverford College with a 7-4 loss at the Fords on Tuesday.
Haverford got out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings. The Garnet cut their deficit to two in the seventh but the Fords held on for the win.
Jett Shue led Swarthmore at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI.
Aidan Sullivan and
Kaiden Rosenbaum each tallied two hits and scored a run while
Max Beadling drove in one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Haverford had a strong start, loading the bases in the first inning and drawing a walk for a 1-0 advantage. The Fords filled the bags again in the second and smashed a grand slam to up the margin to five.
- The Garnet had opportunities to chip into the deficit but were unable to manufacture runs, leaving seven men on base through the first six innings. After Haverford tacked on another run in the fifth to make it 6-0, Swarthmore finally broke through for four runs in the seventh, all with two outs. Rosenbaum came home on an error, Shue singled in a pair, and Beadling had an RBI single.
- In the eighth, the Garnet put the lead-off man aboard but the next three hitters were retired. The Fords added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single. Swarthmore was only able to muster a two-out bunt single in the ninth.
