Women’s Tennis Rolls Past Gettysburg on Senior Day

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team picked up a crucial conference victory over Gettysburg College, 9-0, as the two teams battled for control of the fourth seed in the Centennial standings. The Garnet remained unbeaten against the Bullets as they improved their lifetime record to 12-0 against Gettysburg.

The Garnet celebrated their seniors in their final regular season home match of the season. Erica Stutz, Oviya Kumaran, Spencer Watts, Jenny Lewis and Daniela Padron-Castillo all won matches to celebrate Senior Appreciation Day. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES

- The Garnet swept doubles action to take a commanding 3-0 advantage over the Bullets. Lola Diaz/ Stutz pulled out a hard-fought victory in top singles. The match was decided with a 7-5 tiebreaker as Swarthmore held on to outlast the Bullets.

- Kumaran/ Watts got the Garnet on the board first with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles. Lewis/ Padron-Castllo then made quick work of their challengers with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. 



HOW IT HAPPENED
SINGLES

- Kathleen Shiffer won by retirement in top singles. After taking the opening set 6-3, Shiffer held a 4-1 lead until her opponent withdrew. 

- Kumaran earned her second win with a 6-3, 6-1 decision in No. 2 singles. Stutz also became a multi-time winner with a 6-1 victory in No. 4 singles.

- Ella Strickler won comfortably in No. 3 singles. The first-year took the opening set 6-1, before clinching the win with a 6-2 second set.

- Lara Geib won easily in straight sets at No. 5 singles. Geib dominated both sets, 6-0, 6-1. 

- Riya Rao completed the sweep with a victory in No. 6 action. The first-year bounced back from a 6-3 loss in the opening set to take the second set, 6-1. She went on to win 10-2 in a decisive third set. 

UP NEXT
The Garnet (8-5, 5-2) play their final two regular season games on the road as they travel to Bryn Mawr College on Tuesday, before wrapping up the season at Franklin & Marshall next Saturday.
