Softball Earns Split at McDaniel, Barron Earns Ninth Win in Shutout

WESTMINSTER, MD - The Swarthmore College softball team split its double-header at McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet dropped the opener 10-8, but bounced back to win the finale 6-0.

Lane Barron tossed another beauty for the Garnet as she blanked the Green Terror in a complete game. The sophomore struck out eight batters to earn her ninth win of the season.

Iris Barone did her job at the top of the order with five runs scored on the afternoon. The sophomore was a combined 5-for-7 at the dish as she set the tone for Swarthmore's offensive success.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore struck early in the opener with a pair of runs in the first inning. Alex Simon grounded out to plate the first run, while McClammy brought home another runner with a sacrifice fly. However, the Garnet were unable to shut down the Green Terror in the bottom half as the home team hung six runs on Swarthmore, 6-2.

- Simon singled to left field in the third inning to cut Swarthmore's deficit in half. The Garnet then added a pair of runs in the fourth inning on an error to pull within one score, 6-5.

- Swarthmore struggled to shutdown McDaniel's offense as they quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Garnet added another pair in the fifth inning on RBI singles from Avery McClure and Barone, but the Green Terror added a run in the fifth to pad their advantage, 9-7.

- The Garnet offense kept fighting as Kate Borza singled home a run in the sixth. However, McDaniel got the run back in the bottom half, before tossing a clean seventh to finish off the Garnet.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Barone opened game two with a lead-off double as she ended up plating the first run on an error. The Garnet threatened for more runs in the first, but were unable to get more runs across.

- After an easy first inning for Barron, the Garnet offense rewarded their pitcher with four runs in the second. Despite the first two batters recording outs, Elisabeth O'Connor started the rally with a two-out walk, before coming home to score on consecutive errors. Simon brought home another run with a double, while the Garnet took advantage of another McDaniel error to plate their fifth run, 5-0.

- O'Connor nearly started another two-out rally in the third as she and Barone reached base with back-to-back singles. However, McDaniel escaped the jam as they threw O'Connor out at home on a double steal.

- Barron was excellent for Swarthmore all afternoon. The sophomore cruised through the side in a scoreless third inning, before facing the minimum in a quick fourth and fifth inning.

- The Garnet added another insurance tally in the sixth on McDaniel's fifth error. The Green Terror's offense then put together their best scoring chance in the bottom half, but were shut down by Barron, who struck out the side to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam. McDaniel created traffic on the base paths in the seventh inning as well, but failed to put any runs on the scoreboard.
