HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Swarthmore College softball team scored five times over the final two innings to defeat Haverford College, 12-7, on Thursday and sweep the season series with the Fords.
The two teams began the second game of their Centennial Conference doubleheader back on April 9 but the contest was suspended due to darkness with the score tied at seven after five innings.
Olivia McClammy ended the contest 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, an RBI, and three runs.
Avery McClure was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run.
Iris Barone and
Grace Taylor both tallied two hits and an RBI.
Lane Barron tossed a complete game for the win in the pitching circle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet struck first when Barone scored on a groundout in the opening frame. The Fords answered in the second with a two-out RBI single to tie the game.
- Swarthmore went off for six runs in the third to take a 7-1 advantage. The Garnet sent 12 hitters to the plate and recorded six hits during the inning. Haverford got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch and a single.
- The Fords put up a four-spot in the fourth to even the score at seven apiece. Haverford smacked four hits and capitalized on an error. Both teams managed one baserunner in the fifth but could not score before they ran out of daylight.
- Picking back up on Thursday, Swarthmore scored twice in the sixth to take a 9-7 advantage. The Garnet loaded the bases with one out before
Alex Simon came home on a wild pitch. McClammy then scored on an error. The Fords drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the inning but were unable to score.
- Swarthmore tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh. McClammy knocked in
Jordan Jackson with a single before later scoring on a wild pitch. Taylor recorded an RBI single to center to finish the scoring. In the bottom of the seventh, Haverford put the first hitter on base via a walk again but Barron retired the next three she faced to close out the victory.
