Softball Sweeps Ursinus Behind Extraordinary Pitching

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team swept past Ursinus College with a pair of double-header victories on Tuesday afternoon. The Garnet currently sit third overall in the Centennial Conference with a 6-3-1 record.

Swarthmore set the tone with excellent starting pitching from Emily Bertrand and Lane Barron. Bertrand tossed seven shutout innings, while allowing just four hits in a 4-0 opener. Barron then closed out the sweep with seven strong innings. The sophomore allowed one run on two hits with four strikeouts in a 8-1 finale.

Bertrand showed off her two-way talent in the circle and in the batter's box. The junior was a combined 2-for-4 with four RBI, two extra base hits and a walk. Serafina Tinio also had a nice afternoon at the dish with three RBI and a pair of hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet got all the offense they needed in the first inning. Swarthmore's first three hitters reached base to load the bases. Olivia McClammy was then hit by a pitch to bring home the first run, while Bertrand plated another run on a sacrifice fly. Tinio then doubled the team's lead with a two-run single up the middle, 4-0.

- After retiring the Bears in order to open the game, Bertrand stranded the bases loaded after allowing a pair of singles to open the second inning. The junior then settled in to retire the side in the third.

- Swarthmore threatened in the sixth inning, but were unable to add on. Bertrand and Tinio both worked walks to open the frame, but were unable to spark a rally for the Garnet.
