COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team opened its two-game series against Ursinus College with a 8-3 victory on Tuesday afternoon. The Garnet never looked back after rallying for four runs to regain their lead in the sixth inning.
Joe Radek and Benjamin Buchman each tallied three RBI to help spark Swarthmore's offense. Buchman had the hot bat with three hits, including a game-tying double, while Radek put the Garnet ahead for good with a two-run homer in the sixth. Â
Jack Bowling excelled in his role as the opener with four shutout innings. After a three-run fifth, the Garnet bullpen settled in for four scoreless frames to secure the victory.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Aidan Sullivan singled to open the game, but was left stranded at third base to end the inning. However, the Garnet would take advantage of a
Max Roffwarg lead-off double in the second inning as
Xavier Taylor plated the game's first run with a ground ball to the right side, 1-0.Â
- Bowling escaped a couple jams in the first two innings as he stranded a runner in scoring position. He then cruised through his third frame to retire the Bears in order, before escaping a bases-loaded jam to close his scoring line for the afternoon.Â
-Â Ursinus took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning, but were unable to shut down Swarthmore's offense in the sixth inning. Max Beadling and Matthew Silvestre started the rally with back-to-back, one-out singles before Ben Buchman tied the game with a two-run double. Radek then put Swarthmore in front with a two-run homer to cap off a four-run frame, 5-3.Â
- Jeremy Jensen preserved the team's two-run lead with a shutdown inning in the sixth. The Garnet then added to its advantage with a couple runs in the seventh. Jett Shue and Beadling reached to open the inning, while Silvestre and Benjamin Buchman kept the line moving with back-to-back RBI knocks, 7-3.
- Alexander Rimmerman and Ethan Weiss both hung zeros in the seventh and eighth innings. Swarthmore added another insurance tally in the ninth on a sacrifice fly, before the Garnet bullpen shut the door with a scoreless frame.
