SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The No. 10 Swarthmore College men's tennis team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday, defeating conference foe Ursinus College, 9-0, and topping another nationally-ranked squad in No. 40 Christopher Newport University, 6-3.
Aadhi Raja earned wins in both matches and went a perfect 3-0 on the day.
Rishi Verma and
Andres Fente also played in both tilts and each garnered a pair of victories.
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Ursinus)
- The Garnet captured all nine matches against the Bears. Raja and
Winston Zhang were pushed to a tiebreaker at first doubles but swept the decider, 7-0.
Phil Rehwinkel and
Max Pogorelov teamed up for an 8-3 victory at the second spot and the duo of
Lalith Suresh and Verma took the match at the third spot, 8-5.
- Raja earned a convincing 6-0, 6-2 decision at the second flight to begin singles play. Rehwinkel also had little trouble in a 6-1, 6-2 win.
Aamish Pal took the first set of his match at third singles, 6-3, then rolled to a 6-1 victory in the second.
- Suresh cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at first singles. Fente defeated his opponent at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-4, before Pogorelov capped off the shutout with a 6-3, 6-3 success at the fifth spot.
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. CNU)
- Swarthmore swept the doubles matches for the second time on the day to take a 3-0 lead. The nationally-ranked duo of
Michael Melnikov and
Utham Koduri came out on top, 8-3, in first doubles. Fente and
Rushil Patel had a strong 8-2 triumph at the second spot while
Max Lindstrom and Raja came through with an 8-6 win at the third position.
- Melnikov upped his singles win streak to eight with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 victory at first singles. Verma dominated his match at the sixth flight, winning 6-0, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Garnet.
- The Captains earned a point at fifth singles before Lindstrom came back from a set down and captured the win at second singles. CNU took the bouts at third and fourth singles to close the match.
