SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team dropped its Centennial Conference contest to Ursinus College, 9-6, on Wednesday night. The game was also played for the Anita Deasey Memorial Cup.
The Bears got out to a 6-2 lead before the Garnet netted four of six to close the gap to two (8-6) with just over seven minutes remaining. However, Ursinus shut out Swarthmore the rest of the way and tallied an insurance goal on the way to the win.
Isabela Bloomquist led the Garnet with four goals on the evening.
Abigail Love contributed with one goal and two assists.
Mia Holland recorded a career-high four caused turnovers and also collected three draw controls.
Helen Stafford turned away 13 shots in the Swarthmore net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears got out to a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter. The Garnet broke through in the second period with Bloomquist netting back-to-back goals to get Swarthmore within one (3-2).
- Ursinus scored with just 32 seconds to go in the first half to take a 4-2 advantage into the break. The Bears then posted the opening two goals in the third quarter to up their lead to four (6-2).
- The Garnet bounced back with goals from
Kela Watts and Bloomquist to close the gap to two (6-4) again with 7:40 to play in the third. However, Ursinus answered with a pair of tallies, including one just before the buzzer, to regain a four-goal cushion (8-4) heading into the fourth.
- Bloomquist and Love scored just 25 seconds apart in the final frame to get Swarthmore within two (8-6) again with 7:09 on the clock. However, Ursinus allowed just one shot the rest of the contest and added its final marker with 1:59 remaining.
