GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Swarthmore College softball team began Centennial Conference play with a doubleheader split at Gettysburg College on Saturday. The Bullets took the opener, 4-0, and the Garnet came back to take game two, 9-2.
Swarthmore was held to just one hit in game one but broke through for nine runs and 14 hits in the nightcap.
Avery McClure batted .500 (3-for-6) on the day with two doubles, two RBI, and a run.

Lane Barron hurled a complete game victory in the closer, conceding just two runs and striking out five.
GAME ONE
- Gettysburg took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on a two-out RBI double. After the first four Garnet hitters were retired,
Emily Bertrand beat out a chopper to short for an infield single in the second. After a fielder's choice and a hit by pitch, McClure reached on an error to load the bases with two away. However, a strikeout ended the Swarthmore threat.
- The Bullets upped their advantage to four (4-0) with a two-out, three-run triple in the bottom of the second. The Bertrand single proved to be the only hit of the contest for the Garnet as they were unable to solve the Gettysburg pitcher the rest of the way.
GAME TWO
- Swarthmore got the scoring started in the first on
Olivia McClammy's two-out RBI single up the middle. The Bullets smacked a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to tie it at one.
- The Garnet regained the lead in the third when Jackson scored on a fielder's choice. However, Gettysburg responded again in its at-bat, pushing a run across on a groundout.
-
Iris Barone and Jackson recorded back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth to put Swarthmore in front, 4-2. In the fifth, McClure doubled with two outs then
Molly O'Sullivan brought her in with a base hit to make it 5-2.
- The Garnet broke it open in the sixth with four runs. Barone set the table with a lead-off triple and scored on a groundout. With two outs, McClammy doubled and Bertrand plated her with a single to left center. After a walk, McClure knocked in a pair with a double to left.
- After being tagged for two runs in the first three innings,
Lane Barron shut down the Gettysburg offense the rest of the way, retiring 14 of the last 16 hitters she faced and allowing just two baserunners after the third inning.
