Game Recap: Softball |

McClammy Homers Twice, Simon Records 100th Career Hit in Neumann Sweep

ASTON, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team won its fifth-straight game with a double-header sweep over Neumann University on Tuesday.

The Garnet won the opening contest 8-0 behind seven-shutout innings from Emily Bertrand. The team then battled back to defeat the Knights with a two-run Olivia McClammy go-ahead homer in the seventh inning of game two.

McClammy backed up her Centennial Player of the Week selection with a pair of home runs on the day. Alex Simon was also a force at the plate with four hits in the series. She recorded her 100th career hit in her first at-bat to open game one of the double-header.

Bertrand was outstanding in the circle to open the afternoon. The junior tossed seven shutout innings, while allowing just two hits and a walk to record her third-straight victory. Bertrand has surrendered just one run in her last 21 innings pitched with a 0.33 ERA.

Lane Barron matched Bertrand with her team-leading fifth win in game two. Besides allowing two runs in the second inning, the sophomore tossed six shutout innings to keep Swarthmore's offense in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Bertand escaped a jam after allowing a one-out double to open the first inning. She then settled down to retire the next six batters in order for a clean second and third inning.

- Swarthmore's offense broke through in the fourth inning with a McClammy solo homer. The Garnet threatened with a pair of one-out baserunners in the frame, but were unable to add to its lead, 1-0.

- Bertrand shutdown Neumann in the fourth inning with her third-straight 1-2-3 frame. The Garnet then added to its lead with a run in the fifth inning. Elisabeth O'Connor was hit by a pitch to open the inning, stole second and later scored on a two-out single from Simon, 2-0.

- Bertrand continued to cruise through the Knights lineup as she retired the side in the fifth and sixth innings. Swarthmore's offense then rewarded its ace as they busted the game open with a six-run seventh inning. Serafina Tinio opened the scoring with a pinch-hit single, before Bertrand helped herself with an RBI single to third base. Ava Babcock added on with a bases-loaded walk, while Molly O'Sullivan singled in another run. O'Connor then put Swarthmore ahead by eight runs with a two-run double down the left-field line, 8-0.
