Men’s Tennis Completes Electric Comeback Over No. 20 NC Wesleyan

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 13 Swarthmore College men's tennis team secured back-to-back, nationally-ranked wins with a 5-4 comeback victory over No. 20 North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday. 

The Garnet improved to 10-1 on the season with a perfect 7-0 home record. They have defeated six nationally-ranked opponents.

Swarthmore had its back against the wall with a 4-1 deficit against NC Wesleyan. However, the Garnet rallied back to win four-straight singles matches and steal a victory from the nationally-ranked Bishops.

Rishi Verma delivered the final blow with a three-set victory in an incredible battle in No. 5 singles. The rookie has enjoyed a remarkable season eight-straight victories after dropping his lone singles contest to open the dual meet slate. 


HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES

- Michael Melnikov/ Utham Koduri suffered a rare defeat in top doubles with an 8-4 decision. The Bishops then beat out Verma/ Rushil Patel and Aadhi Raja/ Max Lindstrom in a pair of tiebreakers. Raja/ Lindstrom went toe-to-toe with the No. 23 doubles pairing in the nation, but narrowly lost the tiebreaker, 7-5. 



HOW IT HAPPENED
SINGLES

- Fresh off a victory against the No. 38 player in the nation, Melnikov earned another nationally-ranked singles win over NC Wesleyan's No. 37 ranked competitor. Melnikov climbed out of an early hole to win the opening set 6-3, before cruising to a 6-1 decision in the second set. 

- The Bishops captured a win in No. 3 singles to claim their fourth match. However, Lindstrom kept Swarthmore alive with a nationally-ranked win in No. 2 singles. The sophomore won the first set 6-3, while winning a 10-8 tiebreaker in the second set to knock off his No. 46 ranked challenger. 

- Lalith Suresh kept momentum going with a hard-fought victory in No. 6 singles. The sophomore started off strong with a 6-3 victory to open his match. After dropping the second set 6-2, Suresh responded with a 7-5 decision in the third set.

- Winston Zhang tied up the team score with a wild win in No. 4 singles. The first-year took the opening set 6-2, before falling 6-0 in a challenging second set. Zhang thrived under pressure with a 7-5 victory in the third set. 

- Verma continued an impressive start to his rookie campaign with his eighth-straight singles victory. The first-year gave himself some breathing room with a 6-4 opening set, but dropped the second set 6-3. Verma then came up huge for his team with a thrilling 7-5 decision in the third set.
