Softball Tames Nittany Lions in Home Opener Sweep

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team opened its home schedule with a double-header sweep over Penn State Brandywine on Thursday afternoon. The Garnet won the opening contest 7-1, while holding off the Nittany Lions with a 4-3 decision in the finale, which was called in the top of the seventh due to darkness.

Emily Bertrand was excellent in the team's home opener. The junior tossed seven innings, while allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts. Olivia McClammy helped take care of business at the plate with three RBI, while Iris Barone was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Lane Barron settled in after a two-run first inning to win her fourth game of the season. The sophomore allowed three runs with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Bertrand helped lead the way with her bat as she totaled three hits and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Following a 1-2-3 first inning for Bertrand, Barone set the table in the bottom half with a leadoff triple. Jackson then grounded out to the right side to plate the game's first run, 1-0.

- Bertrand stranded a runner in scoring position in the second and third innings, before the Garnet offense provided their ace with some breathing room. Barone got things started again with a leadoff single and a stolen base to open the third. Jackson then singled to shortstop after an excellent baserunning decision by Barone to distract the fielder and generate a throw to second base. Both runners then advanced on a double steal, before Alex Simon plated a run with a single up the middle. Following a Simon steal, McClammy then drove home a couple more with a single to center, 4-0.

- Penn State got on the board with a leadoff homer in the fourth inning. The run proved to be Bertrand's only blemish on the night as she held the Nittany Lions scoreless the rest of the way, 4-1.

- Swarthmore worked some two-out magic in the fifth inning after Bertrand was hit by a pitch. Molly O'Sullivan then ripped a pinch-hit single into the right-field gap, which scored Bertrand from first base, 5-1.

- The Garnet added on with two more insurance runs in the sixth inning. Jackson got things started with a two-out single to prolong the inning, while Simon kept the train moving with a walk. McClammy and Bertrand then knocked in a pair of runs with back-to-back singles, 7-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Nittany Lions opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. Elisabeth O'Connor helped limit the damage with an outstanding, diving stop at second base for the second out of the inning. Barron then struck out the side in the second to bounce back from a challenging opening stanza.

- Swarthmore cut its deficit in half with a run in the second inning. Bertrand and Serafina Tinio opened the inning with consecutive singles, while Kate Borza brought home the team's first run with a single up the middle, 2-1.

- The Garnet tied the game in the third inning with more two-out heroics. McClammy prolonged the frame with a single up the middle, while Bertrand doubled to left field to bring home another run, 2-2.

- Swarthmore added two runs in the fourth to take the lead. Avery McClure rocketed a double to right field to open the frame, however, the Nittany Lions looked to escape the inning with consecutive outs. McClure then advanced to third on a wild pitch, while Barone followed with a walk and a stolen base. Jackson then came through with another big two-out knock with a two-run single down the right-field line, 4-2.

- As darkness began to set in, the Nittany Lions threatened in the sixth inning. Penn State was able to get one run across, but had its rally halted by another excellent defensive play by Swarthmore. With runners on first and second, Simon made a brilliant heads-up play to get the lead runner at third base on a ground out. The Garnet  then throw a wild pitch during the following at bat, which could have potentially plated the tying run if not for their gold-glove shortstop.

- In the seventh inning, the Nittany Lions put their first batter on base with a single, before the game was called due to darkness.
