CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team came out on the wrong end of a 20-19 slugfest at DeSales University on Wednesday afternoon.
There were runs scored in all but three half-innings and the lead changed several times as the squads went back and forth. The Bulldogs ended up scoring the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Aidan Sullivan continued his offensive success, going 3-for-5 with a double, one walk, and two runs. He upped his hitting streak to 17 games.
Matthew Silvestre and
Wilson Henze each had two hits, while
Brad Johnston,
Benjamin Buchman and Henze all knocked in two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet scored four times in the opening inning. Sullivan came home on a Johnston sacrifice fly,
Max Roffwarg and
Jett Shue scored on a pair of wild pitches, and Buchman scampered home on an error.
- The Bulldogs got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the first, scoring on a delayed double steal and a single. Swarthmore upped its lead to 5-2 in the second with Henze coming home on a double play.
- DeSales scored twice again in the second, this time on a fielder's choice and a double. The Bulldogs then evened the score at five with an RBI triple in the third.
- Henze gave the Garnet the lead again when he scored on a delayed steal in the fourth. However, DeSales answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning for its first advantage. The Bulldogs singled in a pair and added another on a groundout.
- Swarthmore pushed four runs across in the fifth to regain the upper hand. Buchman hit an RBI single then
Kaiden Rosenbaum followed with an RBI double. A wild pitch and an error on the same play brought in two runs to give the Garnet a 10-8 lead. However, DeSales came back with a six-run fifth to go ahead 14-10. The Bulldogs recorded four hits, including a three-run homer, and capitalized on an error.
- Not to be outdone, Swarthmore rallied for four runs in the sixth to tie it up. Two runs scored on a fielder's choice error, one on a groundout, and another on a wild pitch. The Bulldogs responded with another crooked number in their half of the inning, posting five runs on six hits to take a 19-14 advantage.

Matthew Silvestre drove in Roffwarg in the seventh to cut the deficit to four. The Garnet then rallied for four runs in the eighth to even the score at 19 apiece. Henze drove in two with a single to left center,
Max Beadling came home on a wild pitch, and Henze then scored the tying run on a passed ball.
- DeSales posted the run that proved to be the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out single up the middle. The Bulldogs then sat down Swarthmore in order in the ninth to seal the victory.
