Barron Tosses Five-Inning No-Hitter as Softball Heads Home with 6-2 Record

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Swarthmore College softball team split its double-header matchup to wrap up spring break with a 6-2 record on Thursday morning. The Garnet opened the day with a loss to Catholic University, 8-1, before responding with a 10-0 victory over United States Coast Guard Academy in the finale. 

Lane Barron tossed five no-hit innings, while allowing just one walk to cap off a remarkable opening week for the sophomore. Barron earned three wins in four starts, including a victory over No. 8 Case Western Reserve, with 22.0 innings pitched over spring break. She allowed just two unearned runs with 14 strikeouts, while posting a 0.64 ERA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Cardinals started a two-out rally in the first inning after their first base runner reached on an error. Catholic later scored the opening run on a single through the right side. The Garnet answered back in the bottom half after Jordan Jackson reached on an error to open the frame. She then reached second on a sacrifice bunt, before advancing two bases on an errant throw by the right fielder after a McClammy flyout, 1-1.

- Catholic regained the lead with a pair of runs in the second innings. Swarthmore threatened in the bottom half with a pair of one-out baserunners, but could not bring any runs home, 3-1. 

- Catholic doubled its lead with three more runs in the fifth. The Cardinals then added on with two runs in the seventh as they held the Garnet to just one hit for the game, 8-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet set themselves up for success with excellent baserunning in the first inning. After reaching on a one-out single, Jackson stole second base. Olivia McClammy then worked a walk and executed a double-steal with Jackson to put two runners in scoring position. Bertrand then brought home both runners with a double to center field, 2-0.

- Swarthmore continued to add on with three runs in the second inning. Iris Barone plated the first run on a sacrifice flyout, while Jackson and Alex Simon brought home two more with a pair of RBI singles, 5-0.

- Swarthmore added a run on an error in the third inning, while Barron continued to cruise through the Bears lineup. The sophomore retired the first seven batters of the game, before surrendering a walk. She then settled down to retire the next two batters with ease, 6-0.

- Bertrand added another RBI with a single in the fourth inning. Grace Taylor then brought home another run on a sacrifice flyout to increase the team's lead to eight runs. Barron then retired the Bears in order for the third time, 8-0. 

- Kate Borza and Simon added to Swarthmore's lead in the fifth inning. Borza brought home Barone with a single to center, while Simon added on with an RBI groundout. Barron then shut the door with a 1-2-3 bottom frame, 10-0.
