No. 22 Women’s Tennis Downed by No. 5 Wesleyan

AUSTIN, TX - The No. 22 Swarthmore College women's tennis team suffered its first loss of spring break with a 9-0 loss to No. 5 Wesleyan University on Wednesday afternoon.

The Garnet have battled a nationally-ranked opponent in every match this season as they hold a 3-2 overall record. 


DOUBLES
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The pairing of Spencer Watts/ Oviya Kumaran nearly pulled off an incredible comeback in top doubles. After falling behind early, the Garnet rallied back to close the gap, but were unable to dig themselves out of their early deficit, 8-4.

- Swarthmore also put up a close fight in No. 3 doubles. The team of Lola Diaz/ Eda Mjekiqi went back-and-forth with the Cardinals early in the match, but were unable to hold off a late Wesleyan surge, 8-5. 

SINGLES
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Lola Diaz led early in the opening set, before falling 6-3. The Cardinals then clinched the match with a 6-0 victory in the second set.

- Jenny Lewis dropped a competitive battle in No. 2 singles against the No. 4 player in the nation. Lewis dropped the opening set 6-2, before falling 6-3 in the final set. 

- In No. 3 singles, Kumaran kept things close early in the opening set against the No. 30 player in the nation, but eventually dropped the opening set 6-3. Kumaran then dropped the second set, 6-1.

- Katherine Zawada nearly stole the second set after losing 6-1 in the opening set of No. 6 singles. Zawada dropped the second set, 7-5, in the closest match of the contest.

The Garnet (3-2) wrap up spring break against Trinity University (Texas) on Thursday.
