No. 13 Men’s Tennis Stays Unbeaten, Takes Down Another Nationally-Ranked Opponent

Box Score AUSTIN, TX - The No. 13 Swarthmore College men's tennis team maintained its winning ways by knocking off No. 30 Wesleyan University, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon. The team earned its fourth nationally-ranked win of the season as they remain a perfect 8-0 on the season.

Michael Melnikov earned a pair of victories on the day with wins in No. 1 doubles and singles action. The sophomore standout took down another nationally-ranked opponent in singles action as he bested the No. 39 player in the nation. 

DOUBLES
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Melnikov/ Utham Koduri earned their seventh victory of the season with a win over the Cardinals top pairing. Wesleyan started off strong by claiming the first two games until the Garnet duo captured momentum with four-straight wins. Swarthmore maintained control for the rest of the match as they held on, 8-3. 

- The Cardinals evened the score with an 8-4 victory over Aamish Pal/ Max Pogorelov in No. 3 doubles. However, Swarthmore bounced back to win doubles play with a Winston Zhang/ Andres Fente victory in No. 2 action. Wesleyan had control of the match with a 6-4 advantage, until the Swarthmore pairing won four-straight games to overtake the Cardinals, 8-6. 



SINGLES
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Melnikov overcame his nationally-ranked challenger in two sets. The sophomore won the opening set 6-3, before outlasting his opponent in an 8-6 tiebreaker in the second set. 

- Max Lindstrom defeated his opponent in a tightly-contested No. 2 singles match. The sophomore won the opening set 7-5, before clinching victory with a 6-4 second set. 

- Lalith Suresh overcame an opening set loss to earn a victory in No. 4 singles. After dropping the opening set 6-1, the sophomore flipped the script with a 6-1 victory in the second set. Suresh then completed the comeback with a 6-4 third set. 

- Rishi Verma was victorious in No. 5 singles. The first-year took the opening set 6-0, while edging out his challenger in a second-set tiebreaker. 

UP NEXT
The Garnet (8-0) close out their spring break at No. 14 Trinity University (Texas) on Friday.
