No. 15 Men’s Lacrosse Falls Short in Nationally-Ranked Showdown

AMHERST, Ma. - The No. 15 Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team dropped a neck-and-neck, nationally-ranked showdown at No. 14 Amherst College, 14-11, on Wednesday night.

It was a tale of two halves as the Garnet used a seven-goal second quarter to propel themselves to a 9-7 advantage heading into halftime. However, Amherst outscored the Garnet 7-2 in the final half, which included five-unanswered goals to open the third quarter.

Amherst held a slight advantage on faceoffs with a 16-12 edge and controlled ground balls 44-28. The Mammoths also took advantage of both of their extra-man opportunities, while Swarthmore went 0-for-3 on advantages.

Ryder Maston led the way with a three-goal performance for his second-collegiate hat trick. Von Mabbs and Michael Hardiman also added a pair of goals, while four different players scored once for Swarthmore. On the other side of the field, Drew Tyson made a game-high 17 saves for Swarthmore.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maston opened the scoring with the game's first tally at the 11:41 mark. The Mammoths answered back to tie the game until Hardiman regained the lead with 5:19 left in the opening quarter. Amherst then recaptured momentum with three goals in the final five minutes of the first stanza, 4-2.

- Swarthmore turned things around quickly with five-unanswered goals to open the second quarter. Hardiman and Von Mabbs both struck with scores in the opening minute as the Garnet erased a two-goal deficit. Ryan Kim gave Swarthmore the lead with a go-ahead score, before Maston tallied his second goal of the game. Clay Almgren then capped off the team's five-goal swing with an assist from Nolan Ohrman at the 8:13 mark. Moments later, Amherst trimmed its deficit to one score with consecutive tallies until Jackson Brosgol countered with an insurance goal. The Mammoths found the back of the net once more before intermission, but Maston answered with his third goal as time expired in the opening half, 9-7.

- The Mammoths flipped the script on the Garnet with five-unanswered goals to open the third quarter. Amherst jumped out to a three-goal lead and seemed poised to shut out Swarthmore in the third quarter until Von Mabbs settled things down with a much-needed goal in the final seconds of the stanza, 12-10.

- Rex Mabbs pulled Swarthmore within one score after finding the back of the net with 12:18 left. However, the Mammoths defense took over as he held the Garnet scoreless for the remainder of play. Amherst also added two insurance goals as it held on for a three-goal victory.
