Softball Takes Down Pair of Top-10, Nationally-Ranked Opponents

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Swarthmore College softball team swept a pair of top-10, nationally-ranked opponents with victories over No. 8 Case Western Reserve, 4-1, and No. 7 Rowan University, 4-0, on Tuesday afternoon.

Both victories marked the program's highest ranked wins in team history. The Garnet set a program record last season by defeating No. 10 Randolph-Macon College in the NCAA Regional Tournament.

The pairing of Lane Barron and Emily Bertrand led the Garnet to victory with two incredible pitching performances. The duo combined for 14.0 innings, while allowing just one run with no earned runs against two of the nation's top teams.

SWARTHMORE 4, #8 CASE WESTERN RESERVE 1
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Barron retired the first six batters in order to silence the nationally-ranked Spartans. Case Western Reserve eventually got on the board in the third inning on a fielding error to plate the game's first run, 1-0.

- Swarthmore answered back in the bottom half of the third. Iris Barone was hit by a pitch to open the inning, while Jordan Jackson worked a walk to put two runners on with one out. Alex Simon singled in a run and Ava Babcock gave Swarthmore the lead with an RBI single, 2-1.

- Barron put together consecutive shutdown innings to maintain Swarthmore's one-run advantage. The Garnet added to their lead with a Bertrand RBI single in the fifth inning. Olivia McClammy scored on the play after reaching base on a one-out single down the left field line.

- The Garnet escaped a jam in the sixth inning. The Spartans seemed poised to cut their deficit in half with a two-out single to second base. However, Elisabeth O'Connor threw out a Spartan at home to end the inning unscathed. Swarthmore then added to its lead in the bottom half with a two-out knock from Jackson, 4-1.

- Barron shut the door in the seventh with another scoreless frame. After allowing a leadoff walk, the sophomore retired the next three batters in order to upset the No. 8 Spartans.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Bertrand navigated out of trouble in the opening two innings. The Profs advanced a runner into scoring position in both innings, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. Bertrand then settled down with a clean third inning to keep things scoreless.

- Bretrand helped herself with a leadoff double to open the fourth inning. Avery McClure then worked a walk, before Molly O'Sullivan sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Serafina Tinio then came through with a pinch-hit single up the middle to bring home the game's first run, 1-0.

- Swarthmore began to distance themselves from the Profs with three runs in the fifth inning. Simon and McClammy started the rally with a pair of singles to open the frame, while Bertrand worked a one-out walk to load the bases. McClure then cleared the bases with a double to left field to bring home all three runners, 4-0.

- Bertrand tossed another shutdown inning in the fifth as she stranded a Prof in scoring position. She then retired Rowan in order in the sixth, before escaping a two-out, bases-loaded threat in the seventh inning.
