No. 22 Women's Tennis Starts Spring Break With Close Win at No. 29 Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The No. 22 Swarthmore College women's tennis team kicked off its spring break trip to Texas with a 5-4 victory at No. 29 Southwestern University on Monday.
 
The Garnet swept the doubles matches to spark the win in a week where they face three nationally-ranked squads. Oviya Kumaran was the lone Swarthmore player to earn a victory in both singles and doubles action.


 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nathalie Williams and Erica Stutz got the match started with an 8-4 triumph at first doubles.
 
- Kumaran and Spencer Watts pulled out a close match at the second spot, winning 7-5 in a tiebreak. The duo moved to 3-0 with the victory.
 
- Lola Diaz and Kathleen Shiffer completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 success at the third position.
 
- The Pirates got on the board with a triumph at fourth singles. Eda Mjekiqi battled to a tiebreak in the second but ultimately fell in straight sets. Southwestern claimed second singles as well to cut its deficit to one (3-2).
 
- Ella Strickler made her collegiate debut at fifth singles. After dropping the opening set, she fought to a tiebreak in the second but the Pirates ended up with the win to even the match.
 
- Jenny Lewis came through with a big victory at the top flight, winning her match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to put the Garnet back on top.
 
- The final two matches at third and sixth singles respectively both went to three sets. After falling behind, Kumaran came back to take the second set, 6-4, and the decider, 6-3, at the third spot to clinch the match for Swarthmore.
 
UP NEXT
The Garnet (3-1) are back at it on Wednesday when they face another challenge in No. 5 Wesleyan University.
