GEORGETOWN, Texas – The No. 13 Swarthmore College men's tennis team won its seventh straight match with a 6-3 victory at No. 17 Southwestern University on Monday to begin its spring break trip to Texas.
Max Lindstrom and
Winston Zhang both earned wins in singles and doubles play to lead the Garnet. It marked Swarthmore's third triumph against a nationally-ranked squad this season and the Garnet will take on two more ranked programs this week.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore took a quick 2-0 lead as the teams of
Andres Fente/
Winston Zhang and
Aadhi Raja/
Max Lindstrom both earned 8-2 victories at second and third doubles respectively.
- The Pirates dealt the Garnet's top pair of
Michael Melnikov and
Utham Koduri a rare defeat, pulling out a tight match in a tiebreaker, 7-3, against the reigning national runners-up.
- Lindstrom put Swarthmore back up two (3-1) with an efficient 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles.
Lalith Suresh also put forth a dominant effort, taking fourth singles by a 6-1, 6-2 score.
- Melnikov had his three-match win streak snapped in a three-set loss at first singles and Southwestern made it 4-2.
- Zhang picked up the clinching win for the Garnet at third singles. He took the opening set, 6-3, before claiming the second with a 9-7 tiebreak success.

Rishi Verma garnered the final victory for Swarthmore at fifth singles, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
