Softball Kicks Off 2024 Campaign With Two Dominant Wins in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – After having its season opener postponed twice due to weather, the Swarthmore College softball team finally took the field for the first time in 2024 on Saturday, picking up a pair of victories at The Spring Games in Florida.
 
The Garnet defeated Geneva College, 9-1, in six innings in their opener, then shut out the University of Chicago, 12-0, in five innings.
 
Swarthmore batted .392 as a team over the two contests. Jordan Jackson hit an impressive .833 (5-for-6) with a 1.690 OPS, one RBI, and five runs. Olivia McClammy, Rae Barron, and Alex Simon all batted .500 on the day with McClammy driving in a team-high four runs.
 
Lane Barron and Emily Bertrand were dominant in the pitching circle, each tossing a complete-game victory. The two combined to post a 0.64 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and 10 strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Geneva)
- The Golden Tornadoes tallied the first run on a two-out RBI single in the opening frame. The Garnet evened the score in the second when Ava Babcock came home on an error.
 
- Swarthmore took its first lead with a pair of runs in the third. Simon knocked in Iris Barone with a single and Jackson scored on a passed ball.
 
- Elisabeth O'Connor upped the margin to three (4-1) in the fourth with a two-out RBI triple to left. The Garnet broke the game open with a four-run fifth. McClammy drove in two with a double, Rae Barron doubled in McClammy, and Grace Taylor brought home Rae Barron with a base hit.
 
- Swarthmore finished off the win in the sixth as Serafina Tinio notched the game-ending hit, driving in Simon with a single to center to invoke the eight-run rule.

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Chicago)
- The Garnet got off to a quick start, pushing across five runs in the first inning. McClammy smacked an RBI double, Babcock and Bertrand both singled in a run, Babcock scored on Avery McClure's sacrifice fly, and Rae Barron came home a wild pitch.
 
- Swarthmore loaded the bases with two outs in the second before Rae Barron was hit by a pitch to force in a run and make it 6-0.
 
- The Garnet put up another crooked number in the third with a trio of runs. Jackson knocked in another run, Simon followed with a sacrifice fly, and McClammy recorded another RBI double.
 
- Swarthmore's final three runs came in the fifth. O'Connor found her way home on an error, Jackson scored on Tinio's groundout, and Kate Borza registered a pinch-hit RBI single.
 
- Bertrand hurled a complete-game shutout, conceding just one hit in the second inning.
