Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off Widener in Season Opener

CHESTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team opened its 2024 campaign with an 8-7 victory at Widener University.

Annabel Stifler led the charge with her first-career hat trick for a game-high three goals. Isabela Bloomquist also recorded a three-point performance with a pair of goals, while Abigail Love added a pair of goals as well. Gillian Will netted the other goal for the Garnet to edge out the Pride in a tight contest.

Helen Stafford played a full 60-minutes with seven saves to earn the victory in goal. The senior also led the defense with six ground balls, while Lillian Lewis and Anna Stancofski collected a pair of caused turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Defense dominated the opening quarter as both teams combined for just two goals. Widener was excellent between the pipes with five saves, while Stafford made one save and allowed one goal in the opening stanza. The Pride opened the scoring at the 11:20 mark as they held the Garnet scoreless for the opening 13 minutes. Stifler then broke the scoring drought with her first of three goals to draw even at the first intermission.

- Swarthmore rallied for three-unanswered scores to open the second quarter. Love took advantage of a powerplay opportunity to give Swarthmore its first lead at the 10:29 mark. Moments later, Bloomquist added another tally before Will scored her first career goal off an assist from Kela Watts. Widener answered with a score right before the half to trim its deficit to two goals, 4-2.

- The Pride built on their momentum with two early goals in the third quarter. Widener scored both scores within the same minute to draw even with the Garnet. Stifler slowed down the Pride with a goal at the 10:09 mark, before adding another unassisted tally with 4:55 left.

- Early in the fourth, Bloomquist netted her second goal of the game to expand Swarthmore's lead to three goals. Mia Holland assisted the score at the 10:53 mark for the team's third-straight score. After being held scoreless for the opening nine minutes of the stanza, the Pride broke loose with two-consecutive goals with five minutes remaining. In need of a much-needed insurance goal, Love answered the call with her second score to provide the Garnet with some breathing room. Widener would answer with a powerplay goal at the 1:08 mark, but were unable to find the equalizer in the final minute of play.
