No. 16 Men's Lacrosse Powers Past Vassar To Continue Hot Start

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The No. 16 Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team outscored visiting Vassar College, 12-3, in the second half, including 8-1 in the fourth quarter, to pull away to a 21-11 victory at Clothier Field Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Garnet were locked in a tight battle with the Brewers for the first half of the contest. Swarthmore held a slim 9-8 edge at halftime. The Garnet doubled up Vassar, 4-2, in the third for a 13-10 advantage before dominating the final period.
 
The balanced attack continued for Swarthmore as 10 different players found the back of the cage. Von Mabbs netted a hat trick for the second straight contest and finished with a game-high six points on three goals and three assists. Carter Strauch also tallied three goals to increase his team-leading total to 11 on the year. He also added a pair of assists. Clay Almgren and Ryder Maston also lit up the scoresheet with three markers apiece. Nolan Ohrman dished three assists on the afternoon and added a goal of his own.
 
Swarthmore owned the faceoff dot, winning 27 of 36 draws. Matthew Martinez earned 15 wins with Jack McHenry recording 12 victories. Drew Tyson stopped a season-high 13 shots in the Garnet goal to improve to 2-0 on the season.


 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Brewers started the game strong, scoring the first two goals. Carter Strauch got Swarthmore on the board at the 5:57 mark with a set up by Von Mabbs. The two then traded roles for the tying goal just 30 seconds later.
 
- Vassar responded with back-to-back goals again for a 4-2 lead with 1:15 to go in the opening quarter. Michael Hardiman got the Garnet within one with the first of his two goals on the day and the score was 4-3 entering the second.
 
- The Brewers struck again at 13:47 in the second but goals by Von Mabbs and Jackson Brosgol evened it up at five with 12:38 on the clock. The two sides traded goals and the score was seven apiece with 6:13 left in the opening half. Maston and Carter Strauch found the back of the net to put Swarthmore ahead, 9-7, before a Vassar goal cut the deficit to one heading into halftime.
 
- In the third, Almgren and Owen Hoffman scored just over a minute apart to increase the Garnet's advantage to three (11-8). After a Brewers tally, Carter Strauch and Rex Mabbs netted goals in a 37-second span to make it 13-9. Vassar scored with 1:37 to go to make it 13-10 heading into the final frame.
 
- Swarthmore pulled away in the fourth, exploding for eight straight goals to up the difference to 11 (21-10). Six different players posted a goal during the stretch, with Almgren and Maston producing two apiece. The Garnet went 9-for-10 on faceoffs during the quarter.
