No. 23 Women’s Tennis Takes Down No. 33 Vassar in Season Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 23 Swarthmore College women's tennis team opened the spring season with a nationally-ranked victory over No. 33 Vassar College on Friday night.

After dropping their top two doubles matches, the Garnet made up ground with a 4-2 advantage in singles play. Nathalie Williams picked up a massive victory in top singles over the No. 14 player in the nation, while Jenny Lewis, Oviya Kumaran and Eda Mjekiqi battled hard to earn wins in fourth, fifth and sixth singles action. 

Kumaran combined for two victories on the evening as she paired with Spencer Watts for a win in No. 3 doubles. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES

- The Garnet claimed the first victory of the night with an 8-2 decision from Kumaran/ Watts in No. 3 doubles. Moments later, Vassar quickly evened the score with victory over Wiliams/ Erica Stutz in No. 1 doubles win.

- Vassar clinched a doubles victory over Lola Diaz/ Kathleen Shiffer, 8-5. The Swarthmore pairing battled the Brewers in a lengthy match, but fell short of victory. 



HOW IT HAPPENED
SINGLES

- Williams picked up one of the most impressive victories of her career with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Erin McCusker, who currently ranks 14th nationally in singles competition. 

- The Brewers bounced back with a victory in No. 2 singles, before narrowly defeating Diaz in a three-set showdown in No. 3 action. 

- Lewis got the Garnet back on track with a pivotal victory in No. 4 singles to keep her team in contention. After dropping the opening set 6-1, Lewis turned things around in the second set with a 6-3 victory. The senior then battled to a three-set victory to outlast her opponent. 

- Kumaran took care of business in a tightly-contested, two-set decision in No. 5 singles. The senior held on for a tight 7-6 victory in the opening set before closing out the match with a 6-4 decision. 

- Mjekiqi rose to the occasion with a clincher in No. 6 singles. The first-year squeaked out a 7-6 victory in the first set, while sealing the team victory with a 6-4 second set.

The Garnet (1-0) battle another nationally-ranked opponent as they host No. 27 Mary Washington on Sunday.
