SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The No. 23 Swarthmore College women's tennis team finished off a sweep of two nationally-ranked opponents on the weekend with a 6-3 win over No. 27 University of Mary Washington on Sunday.
Nathalie Williams and
Oviya Kumaran both claimed victory in their respective singles and doubles matches to lead the Garnet. Swarthmore started off with a 2-1 advantage after doubles play before the Eagles evened it up with a win at third singles. The Garnet then won four of the next five singles bouts to pick up the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore was down 1-0 after an 8-1 loss at second doubles. The Garnet bounced back as Williams and
Erica Stutz teamed up for an 8-3 triumph at the first position. The home squad then took the lead on a tight 8-6 win by Kumaran and
Spencer Watts at third doubles.
- Mary Washington cruised to a winning decision at third singles to even the match. Williams then remained unbeaten on the season with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at the top flight.
Lola Diaz followed with a win at second singles to give Swarthmore a 4-2 advantage. Diaz captured the opening set, 6-2, before pulling out the second in a tiebreak.
- The Eagles grabbed the victory at sixth singles to cut the deficit to one but
Jenny Lewis clinched the match for the Garnet with a 6-4, 6-1 success at the fourth spot. Kumaran earned her second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 score at fifth singles to wrap up the match.
